Germany is a federal parliamentary republic. It is comprised of 16 states. The territory covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi) with 80.3 million inhabitants. The capital and largest city is Berlin. Until 1990 Germany consisted of two independent sovereign countries: the German Democratic Republic (DXCC Y2) and the Federal Republic (DXCC DL).

As the host of the traveller lives in Karlsruhe, all further journeys started from here. It is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg near the French border.

The famous Karlsruhe Palace was built in 1715 by Charles William, the "Markgraf von Baden". It has been speculated that Karlsruhe was a model for Washington, D.C. as both cities have a centre from which the streets radiate outward. The town is nowadays the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany, the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice.

The traveller also visited Heidelberg 50 km north of Karlsruhe. This world famous city is the location of Heidelberg University, well known far beyond Germany's borders. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic and picturesque cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town.

Crossing the states of Rhineland, Pfalz, and Saarland, the traveller left Germany towards Luxembourg.
