Finland is is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east and Estonia to the south over the Gulf of Finland. It is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union.

Finland is a country of forests and lakes, is perhaps best known for its unspoilt natural beauty. The country has approximately 188,000 lakes (about 10% of the country) and a similar number of islands.

In the far north, the White Nights, during which the sun does not set, last for around 10 weeks of the summer. In winter the same area goes through nearly eight weeks when the sun never rises above the horizon. Finns also claim the mythical mountain of Korvatunturi as the home of Santa Claus, and a burgeoning tourist industry in Lapland caters to Santa fans.
